For over 31 years Postmasters Gallery has continuously supported the unconventional and the bold in the arts.
We are tremendously pleased to partake in the debuting Curated Section at Volta NY - the Derrick Adams' out-of-the-box
exhibition Something I Can Feel - with Hugh Hayden's newest sculptural series Fossil Fashion.
Adams' eight-person exhibition promotes a dialogue about the idea of the body as a place for transformation.
At the heart of Hugh Hayden's oeuvre lies a deep understanding of the contemporary human condition and man's ability
to subjugate and manipulate nature.
Hayden explores the anthropomorphization of nature by using clothing as both an external and internal artificial
organ of identification. By layering successively sized clothing from infant to adult with aquaresin
(Hayden's 21-Century plaster substitute) the new sculptures chart the passage of time and temporality of the body.
Through excavating and carving into these new composites, or artifacts of contemporary civilization, Hayden explores
not only physical human growth but also body transfiguration in a greater dimension and scale more akin to that of a
tree in nature and geological striations of the earth. Through the careful juxtaposition clothing and aquaresin composed
in a meticulous and systematic way, these sculptures exude a modernistic purity of materials and result in the abstract
beauty of randomness of life.
The name Fossil Fashion is conscious of the new norm, which is the disposable nature of everyday life, where clothing
in the form of "fast fashion" is our first mediator between the body and the world. The sculptures become neoclassical
artifacts of contemporary civilization.
