We are pleased to present the next exhibition of Postmasters Gallery in Rome, Role Play. This is a collaborative curatorial project of the nomadic Roman branch PostmastersROMA directed by Paulina Bebecka and The Orange Garden, a contemporary art gallery based in Rome, founded by Arturo Passacantando and Tommaso de Benedictis. The opening of the exhibition has held on March 7th with a performance by OLEK.

The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn't have the weight of gender expectations. - Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, "We Should all be Feminists"

Role Play explores the complexity of the contemporary spectrum of femininity through works that extract and identify the often capitalist-driven semiotical structures, which define feminine experience and gender roles today. Capitalistic and consumer culture bring forward unattainable standards of gender expectations - how we should be and how we should behave. The artists in the exhibition metabolize and reinterpret those mechanisms that attempt to shape the idea of "the woman", in order to underline the plurality of the feminine experience and the discrepancy between the "celebration of youth and beauty" and the simultaneous denigration of its bearers.
